The Embassy of Greece in Nigeria celebrated the Hellenic National Day with a Piano Quintet, held at the Lagos Room of the Transcorp Hotel, on March 25, 2012.
According to the Greek Ambassador, “This is the third year in a row that the Greek Embassy organizes a concert of Classical Music on the occasion of honouring the Hellenic National Day.
“Again, this year, we focus on Chamber Music: this form of Classical Music which is characterized by its intimate nature is called “the music of friends”. As Goethe has put it so correctly (particularly for the String Quartet music) there are “four rational people conversing”. However, performing chamber music requires special skills, both musical and social, which are more demanding, in their totality, than those for playing solo or symphonic works.”
The Ellemis piano quartet was created by four soloists (Stella Tsani – violin; Mikhail Smirnov – viola; Lefki Colouvou – cello; and Elena Chounta – piano) who had cooperated with each other several times in the past, but never simultaneously, until, in 2002, a concert at the University of Patras and its success became the springboard for the creation of a chamber music ensemble.” (Culled from a publication from the Embassy of Greece.)
The event was attended by members of the diplomatic community in Abuja as well as from the government and private sector.
