Indonesians in Abuja celebrate Kartini Day

The Indonesian community in Abuja celebrated KARTINI DAY on Saturday night, the 24th of April 2010, at the Royal China Restaurant in Wuse Zone 5, featuring a performance of traditional dance and music by the Indonesian community. The funfilled event, which included a sumptuous dinner, was organized by Mrs. Rosa Illic, Mrs. Wiwik Johnson, Mrs. Sharlly S. Saifullah, Mrs. Elvira Arisanti, Mrs Rahma Teddy Sutomo, and Mrs. Catur Utami Dewi.

Close to 200 guests participated in the event.

Kartini Day is a special Indonesian holiday that celebrates the life of Kartini, who was born into aristocratic Javanese family on April 21, 1879. She worked for the emancipation of Indonesian women, establishing a school for them as well as improving their living conditions. The Indonesian government declared her a national heroine in the area of women’s rights, making her birthday a national holiday.

World Book Day at the Embassy of Spain

The Embassy of Spain in Abuja hosted readers, authors, and publishers to a reception celebrating the World Book & Copyright Day on Friday evening, the 23rd of April 2010. On this occasion, the Embassy took the opportunity to award the winners of the Children’s Stories Competition and the Spanish Texts Competition, both of which were organized by the Embassy. Goodwill messages were delivered by Mr. Hassan Abdi Keynan of UNESCO and Miss Paula Fedeski of UNICEF. Mr. Xose Tomas, a Spanish illustrator, gave the closing remarks on the children's stories illustration workshop.

Headed by Ambassador Angel Losada (assisted by Eva Barta Martin, Cultural Officer, and Monica Dominguez, Spanish language lecturer), the Spanish Embassy is one of the few organizations in the FCT that promote art and culture (Nigerian and Spanish) on a regular basis, having successfully hosted and organized the very entertaining and informative Spanish Cultural Week for the past four years, which included a painting competition and exhibition, drama, musical concerts, and the popular flamenco dance, featuring music and dance artists from Spain. In November last year, the Spanish Embassy participated in the European Film Festival held at the Silverbird Entertainment Centre. Early this year, the Embassy exhibited works of Spanish Comic Illustrators at the Thought Pyramid Gallery in Wuse. A Children’s Stories Illustration Workshop held earlier in the week was part of the activities lined up by the Embassy to celebrate the World Book and Copyright Day.

Eugenia Abu at the Abuja Literary Society

The Abuja Literary Society hosted award-winning essayist, broadcaster and poet, Eugenia Abu, on Friday 9th April, at the Silverbird Entertainment Centre, Central Area, Abuja. Eugenia read from her new book, Don't Look At Me Like That! and talked about her life and her writing. The event was anchored by the ALS Grand Slam Champion, The Storyteller.

Coming from a trip out of Abuja, Eugenia got caught in a traffic jam, but she still made it to the venue more than an hour later than the scheduled time. Her fans waited for her nevertheless...and the long wait was worth it. Eugenia read an essay about Jos and signed copies of her book.

The session ended at about 10pm.

Fusion - A Fashion and Beauty Event

A fashion and beauty exhibition was held at the Musa Yar' Adua Centre on Saturday, the 27th of March 2010, causing major traffic challenges on the road leading to the Silverbird Entertainment Centre, but that is only because a huge crowd were at the half-day event.

It is not a secret of course that Nigerians are some of the world's most fashion-conscious people. Thanks to the proliferation of magazines and tabloids showing photos of men and women in their most fashionable (and not so fashionable) attires, Nigerian designers are getting minute-by-minute attention among fashion enthusiasts, locally and internationally. One can always do the google thing when there is a wish to keep updated on who is who in the Nigerian fashion scene, but to give you a hint, look for names such as Deola Sagoe, Momo, Frank Oshodi, Adebayo Jones, etc.

Inside Track was at the exhibition and took the following photos:
